The Kaçkar Mountains are an extension of the Caucasus, and separate the Black Sea from Anatolia. Armenians and Georgians settled early in the Pontic Alps, now the Kaçkar, later building wonderful stone monastery churches hidden in the mountains. The Turks gradually occupied the area from the 11th century but area remained ethnically mixed; Turkish, Hemşin and Laz languages are still used.

The Kaçkar is one of the most bio-diverse areas in the world. It has huge areas of mature evergreen forest, upland pastures once grazed by herds of bulls, three glaciers and many glacial lakes. Since the 1980’s, trekkers have enjoyed the National Park and high mountains but, because of dam-building and mining projects, many residents left for the cities.

AYDER

The most-known plateau in our country is Ayder Plateau which is the most popular location in Black Sea Region. Ayder is one of the most popular tourist destinations in recent years with its thermal spring and unique natural beauties and is 19 km far away from Çamlıhemşin District center.

 

Bulut, Gürgendibi and Aşıklar waterfalls will welcome and accompany you along the way. This plateau that is located on a valley at the border of spruce and pine trees that are always green and hornbeam, chestnut, beech and fir forests reflects a different beauty each season.

 

The plateau has an altitude of 1220 meters and there are accommodation facilities for any budget within the settlement. Kavron Stream flows through this small and pretty oxygen-rich plateau. Gelintülü Waterfall flows magnificently just above Ayder. Ayder Plateau serves as a gate for the ones who want to make a tour to both other plateaus and Kaçkar Mountains. There is also a thermal spring within the plateau which reflects a different beauty in winter and provides service through its accommodation facilities during four seasons.

 

Ayder which is currently the most popular center in Rize is the starting point of climbs to Kaçkar Mountains in north direction. There are many accommodation options within the plateau including bungalows, typical mountain (plateau) houses, family pensions and hotels. The plateau is like a holiday town and all kinds of infrastructure services have been completed within the plateau. In addition to its rich flora and fauna, it is also famous for its thermal spring. Ayder Plateau is located in the middle of pine forests and Kaçkar view. Ayder Honey should also be tasted during the tour. The plateau impresses everyone through its magnificent beauties and is waiting for it

Pokut – Sal Plateau

 

It is the first of Sal-Hazindağ plateau series which is located in between the valley created by Pokut, Fırtına and Hala streams which are 15 km far away from Çamlıhemşin. The plateau is ideal for nature-walk, photography and resting and has a rich biological diversity and a remarkable authentic architecture. Foggy views and the authentic wooden houses offer a mystic and authentic atmosphere.

There are plateau houses providing service as pensions within the plateau. You can pass to Sal Plataeu from here (15 minutes). Transhumants come to the plateau on August and stay until October. If Samistal-Kavron-Maçkun Pass route is used for reaching Pokut, a mysterious track surrounded by natural old forests and spring waters is followed.

Sal Plateau:

The plateau is 23 km far away from Çamlıhemşin District and has an altitude of 2002 meters. It is one of the plateaus that should be visited with its traditional wooden houses, authentic structure and view. The walking distance to Pokut Plateau is 15 minutes. The plateau is used by the people of Çinçiva Village in Çamlıhemşin and the transhumants come to the plateau as from July. It is possible to see Kafkas Mountains and Black Sea in fine weathers. Plateau houses can be used for accommodation. Camping is also available.

Elevit Plateau

The plateau is located in Çamlıhemşin district and has an altitude of 1884 meters. The plateau is mostly visited by expatriates in summer months. There are accommodation facilities within the plateau. The traditional mountain (plateau) houses within the plateau are interesting. Elevit Plateau is famous for its horon (a folk dance of the region) and the festivals organized in August. Especially wild goats and other wild animals peculiar to Black Sea exist within the plateau.
